I have disliked my teeth for as long as I can remember. It started as soon as my top two permanent teeth came in. They were mottled and discolored due to fluorosis (a side effect of too much childhood fluoride) and a significant overbite only highlighted this. I remember hearing “ewww…do you ever brush your teeth?!” from my peers in elementary school. Then as a preteen, the orthodontics started. After years of orthodontia, of course my teeth were straighter, but they were also even less white than before.
As I got older, I spoke to my dentist a couple times about my concerns and his only solution was to get veneers – with a $5-$10,000 price tag, it wasn’t even an option. I eventually came to the conclusion that I just needed to accept my teeth as they were. 🙁 Years later, I saw a new dentist who suggested I try bleaching them. He said he had other fluorosis patients who had been relatively happy with their results so I decided to pay the $300 to get the impressions made and purchase the bleach – and you know what? It actually helped! I was pleasantly surprised with my results, but within a few weeks I noticed my teeth were already looking dingy again. I discovered that it wasn’t just a flourosis issue, but my teeth were becoming increasingly crowded (especially my bottom ones) and just weren’t getting as clean since my toothbrush couldn’t reach them effectively. Sigh…. I decided to ask my dentist about Invisalign and was shocked to find that it would cost $4,000-$6,000 even for simple cases like mine. Again…sigh….I guess I’ll be embracing these discolored and crooked babies for the long-haul.
About a year ago, I saw an ad for Smile Care Club (now known as Smile Direct Club). It showed a before and after of mild-moderate crowding that looked very similar to mine and stated that it could be corrected at home in 4-12 months. I ignored the ad probably the first 10 times I saw it. Eventually I started to do some
research googling and discovered that it was a very similar process to Invisalign, except that it is done at home and overseen by a dentist via pictures and impressions. I managed to find an offer for 50% off the initial evaluation kit, so I decided to at least order the kit and look into it more.
I took pictures, sent them to my tele-dentist, and they were quickly approved. I then received my impression kit, sent them in, and received my treatment plan and cost within a few weeks. After seeing my beautiful potential, I decided to go for it! (and chose the option to pay $99/month). My plan had me wearing each tray for 3 weeks, 22 hours a day, with a total of 10 trays. I had an upcoming dentist appointment during tray 3, so I figured if he saw any red flags or had any hesitations, I would stop the plan and get refunded for the remaining trays. Thankfully my dentist thought it was “possibly a good idea” and didn’t have any major hesitations. He told me to go for it, let him know if I needed anything, and even agreed that Invisalign was way over priced and “basically the same thing” – especially for very simple cases like mine.
About half-way through my treatment, I realized my whitening trays would no longer fit my teeth. But…..my new aligners were almost identical to the size/shape as my whitening trays…. Sure enough, I ordered some more Opalescence, squirted a thin line inside the inner rim of my aligners, and it worked perfectly! My Smile Direct Club aligners doubled as bleaching trays! Now, not only will my teeth whiten, but they will stay whiter as my crowding goes away – without ever having to pay for bleach trays/impressions/dental visits again.
Towards the end of my treatment, Smile Care Club experienced a huge growth spurt, became Smile Direct Club, and made some changes to the treatment plans and prices – to include joining forces with Invisalign’s manufacturer in October 2016. This facebook group was also formed as a resource and support group for people who are interested and/or currently using Smile Direct Club. I will say that this program is one of those things that will undoubtedly have mixed reviews, and of course it isn’t the best option for everyone (especially for people with more severe and/or complicated cases). But for me and my smile, I am so incredibly grateful for SDC and LOVE that I was able to find my new amazing smile and straighter teeth at home for less than half the cost of the traditional methods!
